Very excited! Today, I get my @frameworkcomputer Laptop 12 delivered after a couple of "missed" deliveries.
I think I might toot about it, so sorry if it feels like I'm spamming you today.
I'm literally so excited, I keep getting up to check every car that pulls in to my cul-de-sac. 😄
Medienkompetenz geht … irgendwie.
This is going to be a rant, you've been warned. I'm baffled by the Framework 12... Framework already operates in a niche market but then to create a 12 inch laptop that unless it's priced reasonably low would have to compete in an already saturated segment? Sure, I can see a future where all the highschool kids who want to be different purchase it, but they don't have much capital and if they have to choose it's likely to be something else. The target market for a Framework is someone like me but I sit on the fence because their roadmap seems misguided. Give me the 16 with a roadmap for core quality hardware components and software (primarily Linux but Windows support is just as good), choose a distro and focus on the utility software (drivers, etc) and throw in iterations every 3-6 months. This isn't an easy proposition at the boutique level but I'm purchasing it for the ability to upgrade/repair it!
This laptop... who is it for? You can today, buy a brand new "bare bones" ipad mini for $550 USD (with tax). Even without keyboard/pencil pro you get the full ipad ecosystem with it. As someone who hates having to buy equipment because it breaks but has budget to replace equipment, I look at this from all angles (privacy, quality hardware, software, etc).. Apple is STILL winning because laptop manufacturers seemingly don't get it. I want to spend money on boring quality and even with a suite of devices I need a core device to drive the rest. Give me the land cruiser of laptops, boring, comfortable, built to last 20 years and servicable in any mechanic shop on the planet.
This Framework Laptop 12??!! Who is buying this and for what?
