The three-state border. The yellow concrete marker indicates where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. It is just 15 km from KilpisjÀrvi, and tourists flock here to see this spot on snowmobile safaris. While the surroundings are beautiful, the border marker itself is just a man-made rock. The noise from the snowmobiles disrupts the silence of the fjells and causes erosion and compaction of the ground. I have never understood the need to go into nature with motorized means if you are a tourist or hiker. It contradicts all the things nature has to offer you: silence, slowness, and the raw beauty of the Nordic wilderness. Also, you are disturbing the wildlife. For those who live here, it is a different story, of course.
