Many subjects I’ve photographed since I was 11 years old – that was 43 years ago – but the northern lights, also called aurora borealis here in the Northern Hemisphere, were never among them. And my first images of the aurora are far from perfect.

I did learn a few things though: a 24 mm lens is good, but 20 mm or 14 mm would be even better. The lens I used was the Canon EF 24–70 mm f/2.8L II. That maximum aperture of f/2.8 is decent, but next time I’ll be on the lookout for a wide-angle lens with f/1.4.

Most of the time I chose exposure times that were too long, so star trailing was basically guaranteed. I assumed 15 seconds would be fine, and I really should have done my homework more carefully beforehand.

Es gibt verschiedenen Farne und die zahlreichen Moose und Flechten wachsen überall auf dem Boden, den Felsen und dem Totholz und sorgen dafür, dass es selbst im Winter noch grün ist.
