🚢⚓ Maritime archaeologist Tamara Thomsen from the #Wisconsin Historical Society investigates thousands of shipwrecks across the #GreatLakes, which became a major transportation hub in the 19th century before modern roads and railways existed.

Her team has documented over 780 vessels lost in Wisconsin waters alone, ranging from 1679's Griffon to modern ships, plus ancient #Indigenous dugout canoes up to 5,000 years old discovered in #LakeMendota.

Like Bill Murray in the movie "Groundhog Day," bacteria species in a Wisconsin lake are in a kind of endless loop that they can't seem to shake. Except in this case, it's more like Groundhog Year.

First time #WinterCycling on the frozen lake this year. Very good conditions: Enough snow, but not too much, and no frozen crust yet. Plus the Frozen Assets Festival had beautiful kites!
