Speaking of ice skating, thanks to the combination of climate change and being in my mid forties, I had thoughts like "I better go skating on Lake Balaton now as I might only have 2-3 chances at most in the rest of my life.
It has thick enough ice once in about every 10 years that's safe for skating or walking nowadays (and likely getting worse unless the Atlantic current collapses earlier than predicted, in which case we will have a lot of ice skating...)

We took a deep dive into the bustling microbial metropolis of #LakeBalaton and used some fin-tastic technology to uncover its hidden secrets. Turns out, this lake is teeming with many tiny inhabitants!

Balatonföldvár, 1964. August is peak summer in Hungary - known as 'cucumber season' because nothing much happens except the cucumbers grow. People leave the cities and head to Lake Balaton for summer fun: beer, lángos (deep fried flat bread), swimming - and most importantly of all for young people - holiday romances. What was Lake Balaton like in its natural state, and when did it change? Can its near-natural condition still be restored? These are the questions the researchers from ELTE Science Faculty's Paleoenvironment and Climate Change Research Group sought to answer in their latest study, where they also made specific recommendations for the protection of the lake.
