The world has drastically changed from like, the 1500s in Europe.
(Lace existed in new world tribes and west African tribes though. New research.)

Making lace had always been a working class occupation (in Europe), even if respected.

I am a lacemaker. I guess I am semi professional? I do make lace and have it available in my shop.

We don't have the same quality criteria for handmade lace. However, more people can make it, which is good.

Hello.

So about Lace making. Its pretty hard to call yourself a professional lace maker today. Several hundred years ago, it was probably easier.
So in this context professional just means "sells their work, full time or part time."

Fine lace (delicate, filmy) takes a while to make. It's hard to get the thin threads lacemakers used.) There were lacemaker guilds to ensure quality. (More often you had a teacher/school/vendor ensure strict quality)...

It is endlessly cool to me that weaving patterns are code for making fabric and that following the pattern is executing a program

Ive reached a point in this project where i either have to give up or start outright winging it until i make it to the finish line

Its intended to be the canopy of a parasol, but i miscalcluated when initially planning the project and its radius is currently half of what it needs to be to fit the frame i bought to finish it. My plan to "double" the original pattern isnt going to work as i thought it would and there will be huge additional sections i have to design and execute on top of the original doubling and its just so overwhelming to think about bc circles and math and planning are difficult

Ive already frogged and rewoven so much of this thing so many times, im learning a LOT as i go but its just... a lot to know much more of that there is to get thru before its done

Im hoping that sharing here will help me get grounded and motivated to dive into the second "half" of this thing

Made from thrifted thread, used 2.75mm hook

My "almost a square meter of bobbin lace" is soon to reach its end. Just gonna finish this board and then I need to tie off the loose ends. And after that hand-sewing to a cloth I have already woven of the same thread (16/4 linen). In March this beauty will go to my exhibition in the Finnish Craft Museum.

The pattern is from 18th century. The name is 'Cornucopia vine' (in Finnish Runsaudensarviköynnös), though that is given by some researcher. The original name is not known.
