With generative AI, the people who enjoy increased productivity or larger profit margins are typically not the ones who bear the full costs of the technology. The costs are externalized to the people whose copyrighted work was scraped without consent, and to the environment when we significantly increase the data center carbon emissions.

"But it's just a tool we use," does not resolve this ethical problem. Convenience does not justify the harm.
