Worker Solidarity Is the Best Strategy to Defeat Rising Fascism

Donald Trump and his accomplices want working people to look at each other with distrust and divide ourselves over banal differences. The prejudices they foment against Latino immigrants, Black people, and LGBTQ people mask their real agenda: stomping on the rights and power that organized workers have won. But for progressives who want to engage with our co-workers on these issues, we have to watch out for the mirror image of these prejudices in our own attitudes. It’s important to listen to your co-workers’ concerns before drawing conclusions about their true attitudes and world outlook.

Send a letter to Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) leadership and staff in locals to decry LiUNA's support for an apartheid state committing genocide. LiUNA has an ignoble relationship to a state Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the UN special rapporteur and many other human rights groups found years ago to be committing the international crime of apartheid. In the early 1980s, the union’s pension fund began investing in State of Israel Bonds, which seems to have continued. A fter months of publicly defending Israel's violence in Gaza, LiUNA Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, Victoria Mancinelli, interviewed official state propagandist Noa Tishby during a May 9 Jewish National Fund (JNF) gala in Hamilton. In 2000, LiUNA leaders were celebrated at a JNF Hamilton gala, and in recent years, JNF fundraisers have taken place at the LiUNA Station banquet hall in Hamilton. According to the International Court of Justice, Israel is “plausibly” carrying out genocide in the Gaza Strip, a small area with one of the highest population densities in the world. Additionally, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is seeking warrants to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on war crimes charges. Israel has destroyed most of the infrastructure and water in Gaza. According to a two month-old analysis published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, it has likely caused an excess of 186,000 deaths. An August 14 Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor report details Israel’s killing of over 2,100 babies since October 7. The rate of killing of those under the age of two is unprecedented in modern warfare. The JNF has a long history of usurping Palestinian land for the exclusive settlement of Jews. JNF Canada built Canada Park atop the ruins of three Palestinian villages and has assisted the Israeli military. As a result, the Canada Revenue Agency recently revoked the JNF’s charitable status. Why is a Canadian construction union, whose stated purpose is protecting the rights and interests of its members, cheerleading a foreign nation accused of genocide at the World Court? LiUNA needs to stop assisting the atrocities Israel is carrying out against the Palestinians by divesting its pension fund of State of Israel bonds.
