#OTD 10 December 1924: the first gay rights organisation in the US, the Society for Human Rights, was founded in Chicago by postalworker and army veteran, Henry Gerber, inspired by the work of Magnus Hirschfeld in Germany. It lasted a few months, until police arrested Gerber and several others.

Dr James Barry died #OTD 1865. Born female in Cork but lived his adult life as a man. He got his medical degree from Edinburgh and joined the British Army in South Africa. Rose to rank of Inspector General of Hospitals. He performed 1st (successful) caesarean by a European in Africa.
The doctor who signed his death cert said: "it was none of my business whether Dr Barry was a male or a female – that I thought it as likely he might be neither"

Revolutionary Julia Grenan was born #OTD in 1883. She was a member of Cumann na mBan, suffragette and socialist. One of the last women to leave GPO Headquarters in 1916 and one of 77 women held in Richmond Barracks after the Rising.
Julia (aka Síghle) was the life partner of Elizabeth O'Farrell (who carried the surrender in 1916). They both carried dispatches in War of Independence and were Anti-Treaty during Civil War.

Elizabeth O'Farrell died #OTD in 1957. Nurse, republican and Cumann na mBan member, Elizabeth delivered the Easter Rising surrender but was famously 'airbrushed' from that moment in history. In 2021 Sinead Guckian's painting 📷 'Her Surrender' shows different perspective. Commemorated at City Quay, Dublin and park named for her. Buried alongside partner Julia Grenan in Glasnevin cemetery

With her 2nd cousin and life partner Edith Somerville, she wrote the Irish RM and other books (as Martin Ross). VP of Munster Women's Franchise League and Gaelic Revivalist. Trinity College Dublin awarded her posthumous Hon DLitt

Born #OTD in Tallaght 1978, Jemma Redmond was an award-winning bioscientist. Pioneered research into bioprinting organs so intersex people like herself could have children. Awarded Silicon Valley prize shortly before premature death in 2016. Opposed intersex surgeries on children: "Raising children in some stupid binary way is harmful... children should just be allowed to be themselves. They know who they are"
