Following Russian ratification, the #KyotoProtocol came into force on #ThisDayInHistory in 2005. The #UN-backed treaty has 192 parties, with only Andorra, South Sudan, the USA, and Canada outside of it. (The US never ratified it & Canada withdrew.) #GlobalWarming may kill us all.

February 16, 2005 - The Kyoto Protocol went into effect after countries responsible for 55% of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions had ratified the treaty, following Russia’s agreement to its terms. The agreement’s purpose was to reduce such gases to 12% below their levels in 1990 by 2012 and, thus, slow global warming.

180 countries had agreed (except for the United States and Australia, two of the world’s top emitters of GHG per capita) to rules for implementing the Kyoto Protocol on July 29, 2001, in Bonn, Germany. President George W. Bush withdrew the U.S. from the process shortly after he took office that same year. His reasoning was that, since India and China had not signed on, they would gain a competitive advantage. The U.S. is now responsible for 15.6% of the earth’s GHG (with 5% of its population).

It also set up a process for negotiations between countries that have come to be known as the annual #UN #climate summits. It was under the #UNFCCC’s auspices that the #KyotoProtocol was negotiated in 1995, & the #ParisAgreement in 2015 — two monumental moments of global cooperation & progress toward limiting harmful climate #pollution.

Occam's Razor. The data is wrong.

The odds of NB emissions peaking in 2011 is close to nil. But it does explain the 2011 data: that was the only year Canada's provinces reported emissions under the #KyotoProtocol; #Canada withdrew in 2012.

The #ParisAgreement did not come along until 2015. But research dating to 2019, not released publicly until 2024, showed #CA's measurements up to 600% lower than actual.

Only possible: economy collapse.
