Un discípulo llevaba muchos años de sincera búsqueda espiritual, pero a pesar de todos sus esfuerzos no lograba dar el paso definitivo hacia la iluminación. Un día dijo a su maestro:
—Maestro, estoy desesperanzado, daría hasta mi mano derecha por obtener la anhelada paz interior después de tanto tiempo de trabajo. Me siento estancado y veo que el desánimo me invade.
El maestro tomó una decisión drástica. De repente preguntó:
—¿Dónde está el sol?
El discípulo señaló al sol con el dedo índice de su mano derecha diciendo:
—Allí.
En ese instante, el maestro sacó su espada y de un certero tajo cortó el dedo del discípulo.
Dio una orden atronadora:
—¿Dónde está el sol? ¡Señálalo!
El discípulo, a pesar del dolor, obedeció e intentó señalar el sol de nuevo con su dedo índice, pero encontró que éste ya no estaba, sólo quedaba el vacío. En ese instante alcanzó la iluminación. Había comprendido al fin.
Sonriente, el maestro dijo:
—Has hecho un buen negocio, estabas dispuesto a perder una mano y ha bastado con un dedo.
