This braid is... the third attempt at a necklace cord for a necklace for my sister. And I am STILL not satisfied.

What I *want* is a cream-coloured braid (to go with a carved bone pendant) which is purely cream, no other colours, and which has contrasting texture through it, caused by a mixture of thick strands and thin strands.

Attempt 1: the thin strands were too beige, not cream.
Attempt 2: the entire braid was too thick; it might work as a choker, but not a necklace with a pendant.
Attempt 3: the braid has a nice thickness, but not enough texture contrast.

Part of me says "Stop! The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good!" and the other part of me says "I will not stop until I get it RIGHT! Otherwise I will look at it and only see how WRONG it is."

Kumihimo braiding on my Marudai. Playing with texture, a 16-strand braid with soft thick cream bamboo (8 strands) and thinner cream shiny wrapped cotton/acrylic/nylon (8 strands).

Three good things today.

1. Managed to get to my #Kumihimo group and had a nice time.
2. Was able to have a good nap when I got home.
3. Marvel Trumps Hate charity auction continues, and I mostly haven't been outbid. Yet.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things." - Philippians 4:8

Kumihimo is cool! The similarity with friendship bracelets is that you start with a set of different coloured strands and move them back and forth to make a pattern, but the way it is structured is quite different. My understanding is that friendship bracelets are knotted. Whereas Kumihimo is braided.

There are lots of tutorials out there for simple Kumihimo, not so many for the more advanced stuff. (But hooray for my monthly Kumihimo group!)

#Kumihimo

We'll be taking part in the DoES Liverpool Maker & Craft Fair from midday to 5pm on Saturday 30th August. Come along and try some braiding using the recycled plastic kumihimo discs we made at @plastacs Plastic Playground session last week! Maybe make a key fob!

It's part of DoES Liverpool's Birthday Celebrations and Open Day. Follow them @DoESLiverpool to find out more!

#kumihimo

The other day I was introduced to #Kumihimo, or a style of Japanese braiding. I learned one style, but would like to learn more of them, both round and flat. Much of what I'm finding for instructions online are based on following pictures or diagrams, so not useful for me. The books I found on Bookshare also are very picture-heavy. Does anyone have any idea where I could find written instructions for different kinds of braids? I'm also trying to think of a good way to adapt my disks and plates so that if I need to be able to referred to the numbered slots I have a way of doing that. So if any of my blind followers or anyone who is good with description has any ideas or suggestions for me please reach out. #crafting
I need laces in matching color for my current #sewing project. A good opportunity to learn a new technique: For me it's #kumihimo

#WIPWednesday You wouldn't think such a tiny braid would take so much work, but this took me hours. Part of the reason for the long work-time cannot be seen: it was a 12-strand braid, but 4 of the strands were removed after the braid was complete; that is part of the Cunning Plan of this braid, to make it "lacy".
Cool effect, but I am unsure whether I want to do it again.

Now I have a full set.

A trans pride bracelet I made myself from a kit gifted to me several years ago. I've gotten so into kumihimo lately, it's so relaxing. Keeps my hands busy.
