Kubla Khan wanted Japan. Twice. The first time? Brutal. The second? Wiped out by a typhoon. Samurai vs. Mongols with a divine wind twist. Turnbull’s The Mongol Invasions of Japan is the deep dive you need.

The Mongol Invasions of Japan, 1274 and 1281

From Xanadu, Kubla Khan plotted Japan’s invasion. Only after acquiring Korea did he gain the maritime resources needed for the operation.

VIKINGS vs SAMURAI
Kubla Khan had the silk, the soldiers, and now the ships—thanks to conquering Korea. Twice he tried to slam Japan. Twice, nature dropkicked his fleet. Typhoons, samurai, and Turnbull's sharp storytelling make this saga wild as hell.

Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coledridge (Poem)

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the cave.

It's #CupOfTeaSocial #QuizQuestion time once again and in celebration of #WorldPoetryDay today's question is about Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (he of 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner').

One of STC's most famous poems is Kubla Khan. He claimed that the poem came to him in an opium induced dream one day when he was hanging around in Somerset, England. It was originally planned to be 200-300 lines long, but as he rushed to write it down on waking he was interrupted by "a person on business from Porlock" and he promptly forgot what he was going to write. How many lines of Kubla Khan did he manage to commit to paper before his interruption?

Whose dome this is I think I know.
A sacred river there does flow
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea below.

So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers are girdled round;
And gardens bright with sinuous rills
And many fragrant trees abound.
