Agi: Raid russo su Odessa. Zelensky: "Terrorismo contro i civili"

Zelensky: "Terrorismo contro i civili"

Russian raid on Odesa. Zelensky: "Terrorism against civilians"

AGI - The death toll from Russian raids overnight against Ukraine is three. Kyiv responded with an attack on Yaroslavl, north of Moscow, where the local governor reported the death of a child and the injury of the parents, who are in serious condition. In Odesa, the raids targeted a residential neighborhood and a maternity ward, causing one death and 11 injuries, according to the provincial administration, explaining that among the injured is a child. Further north, in Kryvyi Rih, two men died in the Russian raids, reported the local military official, Oleksandr Ganja.

Zelensky: "Terrorism against civilians"

During the night, Russian forces struck several civilian infrastructure sites in Odesa, including a maternity hospital, causing casualties and extensive damage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it “pure terrorism against the civilian population” because “there was no military purpose.” In a post on X, the Kyiv leader confirmed the extent of the damage to various sites hit by approximately sixty drones, including the Primorskyi district maternity hospital, residential buildings, commercial establishments, a port, and critical infrastructure.

Nighttime attacks are also being recorded in the Poltava and Dnipro regions and have caused another two deaths and some injuries. “Every attack of this type demonstrates that Russia has no intention of ending this war. For this reason, any easing of pressure is dangerous,” Zelensky emphasized. The Ukrainian president reiterated the importance of continuing “coordinated efforts to protect human lives, our cities, our villages and our infrastructure,” strengthening both “the defense of our country and our diplomacy.”

In the distant 2016, when I was a member of an environmental NGO in Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine), I started using satellite Earth Observation data to monitor the condition of large industrial tailings ponds.

At that time, environmental regulations required these storage facilities to be either flooded or at least kept moist to prevent dust storms.
Industrial operators often ignored these rules, leaving huge dry surfaces exposed — which created massive dust pollution affecting nearby communities.

Using Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 imagery with false-color composites, I developed a simple but effective method to map dry, moist, and water-covered zones of tailings ponds.

Local residents and journalists were absolutely delighted! Industrial companies, on the other hand… reacted very differently 🤣

These maps are from 2016–2017 and show several tailings facilities around #KryvyiRih.

📘 A small milestone for my independent research project

I’m honestly a bit shocked.
When I published the first version of my hydrogeochemical monograph on May 27 (v0.72), and then the updated version on August 4 (v0.75), I expected almost no reactions at all.

Today, the combined statistics on Zenodo show:
- 1,400 downloads
- almost 3,000 views

For a niche, highly technical, openly accessible monograph created by one person — this is far beyond anything I imagined.

Thank you to everyone who found the work useful enough to download, save, or read it.
Your interest is the only reason this project keeps growing.
