Soon after, we reached the road again. It began ascending a ravine into the hills beyond Hiroshima, and the vegetation changed. The land was dry, dotted with fantastic junipers, and frequent volcanic outcroppings. There was a pleasant brook in the ravine, and we enjoyed clean water to wash down the watercress, dropwort, and wild parsley we found. We also gathered withered juniper berries that left a resinous flavor in our mouths.
