Another chapter about our trip.This one is all about #maggotfarming We were inspired to see how #farmers raise maggots that are used as #nutritious feed for their #chickens and pigs.

The process starts with black soldier flies that are kept in specially designed meshed cages!

The flies lay eggs, which are carefully collected and moved to safe areas for hatching. The larvae feed on crop residues, compost, and other organic materials as they grow through different stages. Under warm conditions, the whole process takes about two to three weeks!

This was a great inspiration for us as #EYN. Seeing this simple and practical system gave us new ideas, and we hope to one day establish a similar project in our community and apply what we learned during the trip.

Charting New Paths: The Promise of Alternative Publishing Practices

How does innovation arise in scientific publishing? Under what conditions can alternative publishing practices become established as the new standard? And what options for action are available to research institutions, funding organizations, or operators of publishing platforms? Answers to these and similar questions are provided in the final report of the Alternative Publishing Platforms project, Charting New Paths: The Promise of Alternative Publishing Practices. The study, commissioned by Knowledge Exchange and carried out by Research Consulting with the support of an international group of experts, identified six distinct alternative publishing practices: preprint posting, open peer review, preregistration, versioning, review and curation after publication, and modular publications, that address specific limitations in conventional publishing workflows, offer benefits around research integrity through transparency; increased speed and efficiency; and shifts power dynamics towards greater equity and access. The barriers to adoption of these alternative publishing practices are deeply embedded in how scholarly communication operates and researchers face hard choices between experimentation and career advancement. This work identifies the critical enablers for the successful adoption: critical collective action and coordination, reform of research assessment, investment in infrastructure and capacity and representation in digital infrastructure. It emphasizes opportunities for action across five key stakeholders: Research funders, Research institutions, Conventional publishing platforms, Alternative publishing platforms and Infrastructure providers.

Small European publishers and the transition to open access publishing: a 2025 snapshot

How are small scientific publishers approaching the transition to open access publishing models? What challenges do they face in this process? What are key benefits of transitioning to OA? Knowledge Exchange have explored these and other related questions in our newly published report ‘Small European Publishers and the transition to Open Access publishing’. The study was informed by the 2022 report Landscape study of small journal publishers for the Knowledge Exchange, was undertaken by Information Power as an independent consultant and was commissioned and overseen by Knowledge Exchange. It concludes the Knowledge Exchange project exploring Small publishers and the transition to open access. The study finds that the publishers interviewed for this project see considerable benefits in transitioning to open access publishing models (e g. increased visibility). They also feel a strong ethical alignment with OA principles. However, the benefits are offset by significant barriers and concerns. The study shows that small academic publishers face systemic inequities that can only be overcome with the coordinated support of funders, libraries, consortia, policymakers, and universities. The report contains detailed recommendations for further actions. Our project aims to contribute to preserving bibliodiversity in scholarly publishing and to developing a polycentric publishing landscape geared toward the needs of researchers in all disciplines, research fields or scientific cultures.
