Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office has lifted Level 3 evacuations. The public should be aware only Hwy. 142 is open to through traffic. All other roads within Level 2 evacuation areas are restricted to local traffic.

Along Hwy. 14, fire crews continue to patrol and monitor for any remaining heat, ensuring perimeter security.

Within Catherine and Major creek drainages, crews have plumbed both sides of Catherine Creek and are identifying and mopping up heat toward Major Creek. Ensuring these heat sources are eliminated, removes potential threats to primary lines.

Firefighters are using an unmanned aircraft system to locate heat and extinguish hot spots in the Dixon and Silvascreek drainages, and between Centerville Highway and Oda Knight Road. Fire crews are also working to protectseveral small green islands within the fire footprint.

Fireline along Hwy. 14 corridor is secured, but many falling rock, debris and tree hazards remain. Washington State Department of Transportation and Klickitat County officials are working to mitigate these hazards.

On the Snyder Canyon Fire, hotshot crews are working with aviation support to secure fireline around the southeast corner of the fire.

WEATHER: Temperatures could stay below 80 today, but are predicted to rise into the 90s by Monday.

July 26, 2025: Within the Burdoin Fire footprint, crews are focusing on patrolling and extinguishing hotspots around homes to a depth of 100 feet. Fire resources are also building direct lines to preserve an unburned island along Lyle Snowden Road and protecting unburned grazing land on the east end of the fire. Work is also continuing in the Catherine, Major and Silvas creek drainages to secure the northern perimeter.

Many factors affect determining when an area is secure. Crews can spot visible smoke and extinguish those hot spots, but falling pine needles and leaf litter landing on hot ash can smolder without generating smoke for a long time, then flare up when the wind is right. Persistent gridding and hot spotting will continue around the perimeter will continue.

Resources are using an unmanned aerial system equipped with infrared capabilities to identify these unseen hot spots and extinguish them thoroughly. Properly extinguishing a hot spot is like drowning out a campfire – applying water, stirring, and applying water again until it is dead out and cold to the touch.

Burdoin & Snyder Canyon update for Friday, July 25

Firelines held against gusty winds Thursday and reinforcement work progressed smoothly on the Burdoin Fire. On the Snyder Canyon Fire, crews continue to make good progress on building direct fire lines.

On the Burdoin Fire, crews are working to stop fire movement within the unburned “fingers” around Catherine and Major creeks, Lyle Snowden Road and Canyon Road, as well as a “horseshoe” on the east end of the fire.

Some ground resources were temporarily redirected from the Burdoin Fire to the Snyder Canyon Fire yesterday and were backfilled with the arrival of an additional hotshot crew and other resources. Structure protection activities were not impacted. Aviation resources are supporting operations on both fires.

Thanks to the fast initial response by local units, the Snyder Canyon Fire has not increased in size since Northwest 13 assumed command yesterday. Crews on the ground and in the air quickly boxed in the fire and will continue to add depth to the initial fire lines in the coming days.

Weather: Temperatures are expected to be much cooler through the weekend, with higher relative humidity and diminished winds.

$20,000 reward for help catching the person or persons killing #endangered #grey wolves in #Washington State. Three are now dead. These animals need protection. The killings threaten the survival of this species. And it's a great way to pay off those student loans President Joe Biden couldn’t cancel.

$20,000 reward offered after third endangered gray wolf killed in Washington state

A conservation group is teaming up with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to offer a $20,000 reward for help catching the person or people responsible for the deaths of three gray wolves in Washington state.

Washington, Klickitat County, near Goldendale. Wheat country, abandoned farm in foreground, occupied farm beyond. Heard in local filling station: "Well, heck, the large farmers are buying out the small farmers and taking over the country. The farmers have to do it in dry land farming to build their land up to where it was. The little fellows are off to the four winds."
