A few years back, we took a trip titled "Scotland and Orkney". I've been wanting to go to Orkney for years so was very excited. Due to life's usual effups, the Orkney part was pared down to four hours (out of eight days). 45 minutes in Kirkwall ... I _ran_ around trying to get some semblance of an impression of the place. At least these good natives had the kindness of throwing their hen/stag party right outside of St Magnus's cathedral! A nice touch having both him and her in the same do instead of separating them, and one of them sometimes ending up in Jakarta rolled up in a carpet, or some such. Anyroad, I shall have to go back to Orkney. Reading tip: The Outrun by Amy Liptrot.

The Orkney Wireless Museum is an Aladdin’s Cave for anybody with an interest in how technology has developed in the last 100 years. On the outside, the premises seem small, but once inside the Kirkwall venue, it’s a treasure trove.
