Augustus Ward Loomis was a Presbyterian missionary to China and Chinese people in the US. The Treaty of Nanjing (1842), made China pay for expenses of war and opium it had refused. Loomis, a missionary, notes that the Chinese common people never got a clear conception of why they had to pay.
