An old Finnish saying goes “Kevät keikkuen tulevi” — spring arrives hesitantly. It reflects the character of the northern spring, when winter loosens its grip little by little and the weather shifts back and forth between cold and warmth.

This weekend the weather treated us to clear sunshine, so we went out to Koitelinkoski in Kiiminki to grill sausages and enjoy the crisp outdoor air. The Kiiminkijoki is still mostly frozen, but the water is already moving beneath the thick ice, occasionally appearing in small openings where the current breaks through.

In Oulu, March still means plenty of snow, yet the sun has begun to warm the days. Small rivulets form as the snow slowly melts, and long icicles hang from the eaves — quiet signs that spring is approaching.
