The thing with the 200 mm lense is, that it narrows down my field of view by a lot. That limitation forces me to very new perspectives. I either focus way more on details or I have to move away quite often, to have a chance to get the scene into the picture. This changes the way I analyse my sourrounding, because I can either look at details within a 20 meters range or I am looking and scence and objects that are further in the distance. A bike withought rider would need to be 20 m away. Maybe more, otherwise there is no chance to fit it in the frame.
Also the proportions from objects in the back and in the foreground to the actual object in focus are very different to wider lenses. I imagine this picture taken with the 23mm lense: the car would take way occupy way more area, father and son would be way smaller in comparison and the boats in the back would be in the picture with a lot more of their detials without adding any more relevant information - hence they would bring distrection from the actual scene.
Technically one could have the same effect with a wider lense by croping in, as
@rstub mentioned here:
https://pixel.tchncs.de/p/rstub/931959487367050992 before. Appart from the los of effetive sensor area or say pixels it is also a difference in approach. A wider lense wouldn't offer that limitation in first place. And I would describe limitations as an offer... a feature, not a bug. At least for me as learner, not a pro, this helps me to make me aware of relevant settings and options that I tend to forget or not even recognise with a wider lense.
There is another feature (not a bug) to the 200mm. I take less pictures and with the manual focus I have a lot of missed focusses as well - even though my focussing is constantly improving, I still miss more than I manage to focus spot on. It forces me to take more time and evaluate in advance where, how and also wheather to bring myself into position for the shot. It is slowing me down in a very positve way.
