Part two of our spotlight on Netflix's UNTAMED, with middle block DP Brendan Uegama, CSC, is now live! ⛰️

"When you come in as a second DP, your first priority is the show. In order to do that, you must understand the established look - why certain choices were made for camera work, lighting, lenses, etc. You have to embrace all of that. You don’t want to create something completely different. You have to (and should want to) build on what’s already there.

...If you get stuck worrying about gear choices, or what you didn’t get to pick, you’re focusing on the wrong things. The gear should serve the story and aesthetics already established. Once those are set, your job is to tell the story through the camera, lighting, and use the environment and sets to represent the characters the right way." - DP Brendan Uegama, CSC

We connected with Emmy-winning Director of Photography Christian Sebaldt, ASC, to discuss the experience of crafting “Final Destination Bloodlines,” from defining the visual style of different time periods, to shooting for IMAX, and more. 👇

"We tested old Canon FD lenses, and K35s, anything that I had been dreaming about applying for those period sequences. They all looked nice. And we’re all going, ‘Yeah, this is a possibility. Those are good. We could use those.’ And then Court Weeks (General Manager & Business Development, Keslow Camera Vancouver,) came and said, ‘Have you tried the Leitz Primes?’ And I said, ‘I actually have not. I've worked with many other of the Leitz lenses, but not those.’ And he said, ‘Just try them.’

...We just fell in love with them. They're not too big or heavy, and they're all pretty much the same size. They're easy to work with. And we all said, ‘Let's just shoot both the period and present day segments with these, because we like the look of them.’ They’re spherical, which I preferred over anamorphic because with so many visual effects, I just thought that would make our life easier down the road. Also, to play it safe with IMAX, if we had lenses with aberrations and issues on the edges, that might be a mistake. Everybody's happy with the outcome. We're thrilled." - Christian Sebaldt, ASC

"You can't hide forever." 🔪

The entire first season of HAPPY FACE is NOW STREAMING, only on Paramount+. 🙂

"HAPPY FACE is inspired by the true-life story of Melissa G. Moore; the critically acclaimed Happy Face podcast from iHeartPodcasts and Moore; and the autobiography Shattered Silence, written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook. At 15, Moore discovered that her beloved father was the prolific serial killer known as Happy Face. As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison.

Jumping off from Moore’s true-life story, the Paramount+ Original Series follows Melissa (Ashford) and her incarcerated father, known as the Happy Face Killer (Quaid). After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life. In a race against the clock, Melissa must find out if an innocent man is going to be put to death for a crime her father committed. Throughout, she discovers the impact her father had on his victims’ families and must face a reckoning of her own identity."

Keslow Camera is honored to have supported production of this pulse-pounding crime thriller.

Thank you to Nick Thomas, CSC, for the BTS shots! 📸

Part two of our spotlight on Yellowjackets Season 3, with Michael Wale, CSC (https://www.michaelwale.com) [Episodes 2, 4, 6, 8, & 10] is now live on our website!

“Sometimes, on set, it feels like you're on a lifeboat, and you're at sea for three months, and so you wanna have people you get along with. With the people you're with, you wanna have some people that are really good at rowing, and some people that are really good at navigation, and some people that are really good at catching fish, and people that are really good at building shelter. And, I think a crew like Yellowjackets is all that. It's having the right people and people you enjoy being with, and that's priceless, really.” - Michael Wale, CSC (https://www.michaelwale.com)

DP Shasta Spahn (https://www.shastaspahn.com) [Episodes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9] took us through the process of shooting this intense wilderness thriller, proudly supported by Keslow Camera Vancouver.

“In season two, we were locked in a cabin. We were on a stage. We didn't have scope. We had, you know, 12 Yellowjackets in a very small, two room dark cabin. Everything was piled in snow. And now we are moving into summer, and the Yellowjackets are gonna have food, and they're gonna have new shelter. We were gonna be shooting in this location that we found that was just so beautiful and so we weren't on stage… I really wanted to embrace this color palette of greens and browns and yellows. I was very specific, I had certain framing choices I really wanted to use, for the past storyline. It was supposed to be sort of like this beautiful idyllic landscape that they were living in, and then we knew all of this horror was gonna happen. So we really wanted the contrast of beauty with blood.” - Shasta Spahn
