#40ACRES, from director R.T. Thorne, is NOW PLAYING in theaters nationwide and streaming on all rental platforms.

We sat down with CSC Awards "Theatrical Feature" nominee, DP Jeremy Benning, ASC, CSC, to discuss all things 40 ACRES, from working in the unpredictable elements on a functional farm, to seamlessly blending practical and visual effects to make the film’s not-too-distant, post-apocalyptic future a reality.

“We ended up landing on the ARRI ALEXA 35 and the MasterBuilt Soft Flare primes. When R.T. and I both looked at the lenses, we liked the slightly vintage look. They were still pretty sharp, but they had softer edges. It was a slightly older feel. It's a good sense of grittiness of the world, without too much character or too dirty looking, but also not too sharp and clean. So it was that sweet spot in those lenses.

…The Alexa had just that extra bit of detail in the very bottom end of shadow that, especially with our contrasty day interiors, night exteriors, that kind of thing, and knowing that we had a cast of a lot of different skin tones, but a lot of darker skin tones, that having that extra bit of detail to pull up in the grade if we ever wanted to lift someone's face a tiny little bit here and there, that would give us the most flexibility given the nature of our schedule.

Keslow did an amazing job supporting us… We didn't have any problems with camera gear. Everything worked. The cameras performed, all the lenses, everything performed well. It was prepped well. It was all super positive, and it was a great first experience working with Keslow.” - Jeremy Benning, ASC, CSC

David Cronenberg's “THE SHROUDS,” a deeply personal exploration of grief through the lens of Cronenberg’s singular vision of body horror, is NOW PLAYING nationwide!

We spoke with DP Douglas Koch, CSC, in a wide-ranging conversation on the debate between film versus digital cinematography, the negative influence of artificial intelligence, the recurrent collaboration between Cronenberg and Koch, and how Keslow Camera contributed to the production of "THE SHROUDS."

"As you can imagine, I did still spend the majority of my career shooting on film. I think film is great, but I do consider the digital cameras that we shoot with now, in many ways to be a real sort of advancement, particularly in the art of cinematography. There are so many more things that are possible with them that I find it impressive. And the removal of certain things, like even technical matters like dirt and scratches, and uneven development, if you get bad luck and you get poor processing. There are all sorts of things about film that I did always find frustrating or scary.

...There may be cinematographers out there that would pine for the old days, because to be very honest about it, the cinematographer through most of the history of cinema was sort of Merlin the Magician, in the sense that you were granted this sort of extra power, because you were, in theory, the only one who knows what this is going to look like on film." - Douglas Koch, CSC

We connected with DP Mat Barkley (https://www.matjbarkley.com) to discuss the process of making SXSW official selection “SWEETNESS," proudly supported by Keslow Camera Toronto.

“We knew we were going to wind up in some situations where the extended sensitivity and dynamic range of the Alexa 35 would be a huge asset for us. I know there’s some great alternatives to Arri out there at the moment, but my comfort level with their colour rendition and overall workflow isn’t something I wanted to challenge on a project where my attention would need to be in so many other places... Our writer and director, Emma Higgins (www.emmahiggins.com), [was] so good at selling Rylee's story and the world it inhabits [in the script.] I was 100% onboard after our first call. The script explores some of the same locations again at different times of day and with our characters in varying states, so finding ways to showcase that through the camera was a really attractive challenge.”
