60 years ago today, I was in the 1st grade. Like every classroom, there was a speaker on the wall for the morning announcements. This day, however, a radio broadcast came over the speaker. It was odd because I'd never heard the radio coming from that speaker. #KennedyAssasination

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy

The events of the past decade have further substantiated the half-century appraisal of the event as an initial manifestation of the breakdown, under the pressure of interacting domestic and international contradictions, of American democracy.

My father was an Irish Catholic Kennedy Democrat. He was also a newspaperman.

He told me that he never before or after saw a newsroom running at full steam with staff crying as they worked to put the paper out.

We watched the funeral as a family. I was 7. My father pulled me onto his lap. I could feel his tears on top of my head. I stayed very still.

When I saw John-John salute, I thought, โ€œThat must be what you do when your father is assassinated.โ€
