Yesterday I was at my favorite library and was about to buy Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert vinyl. I resisted the temptation and put it down. Here’s the problem: I don’t have a turntable. Part of me is convinced that certain fundamental vinyls are worth having, no matter what. They’re just beautiful artifacts (and TKC happens to be one of the finest). And then there’s the fact that albums such as this one, I feel they really made me, very much like the books I read. The famous Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote: “I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.” I feel it holds for selected music too.
After driving in a clapped out Renault 4 all the way from Lausanne to Köln, Keith Jarrett and his producer Manfred Eicher found out the requested piano hadn't been delivered to the Köln Opera House.
Organised by the then 17-year-old music promoter Vera Brandes, the show had a lot of promise, but not in the way she thought.
Jarrett had selected a Böserdorfer 290 Imperial full grand piano, but there was some confusion in the Opera House backstage when a beaten and broken mini-grand was found. Thinking the right piano had arrived, it was placed on the stage. This piano was broken is so many ways, had trouble holding tune, and movement was creaky and rustic.
By some theatre magic, is was tuned by a local as best as could be, and the rustic, abrasive nature of the piano was embraced by Jarrett, as this live recording went straight into jazz royalty, and became the best-selling piano solo album ever.
