In his recent remarks, Shariff Chaudhry of Pakistan has referred to the Doha Agreement between the United States and the Taliban. While it is a misunderstanding on his part to believe that this agreement also covers #Afghanistan-#Pakistan issues (the text of the Doha Agreement is provided below), this assumption leads to an interesting thought. In fact, a similar agreement between Afghanistan and Pakistan — in which both countries commit to preventing any individual or group, including ISIS and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), from using their territory to threaten the security of the other country, and also accepting third-party monitoring of such commitments — could be in the interest of both countries. Based on recent conversations with Taliban leaders, I believe they are willing to negotiate such an agreement. And this could fundamentally transform relations between the two neighbors. Now the ball is in Pakistan’s court.

در اظهارات اخیر خود، شریف چودری از پاکستان به توافق‌نامه دوحه میان ایالات متحده امریکا و طالبان اشاره کرده است. هرچند این یک سوءتفاهم از سوی اوست که گمان می‌کند این توافق‌نامه مسائل مربوط به #افغانستان-#پاکستان را نیز در بر می‌گیرد (متن توافق‌نامه دوحه در زیر دیده شود)، اما این تصور به یک اندیشه جالب منجر می‌شود. در واقع، یک توافق‌نامه مشابه میان افغانستان و پاکستان — که در آن هر دو کشور تعهد کنند که به هیچ فرد یا گروهی، از جمله داعش و تحریک طالبان پاکستان (TTP)، اجازه ندهند از قلمروشان برای تهدید امنیت کشور دیگر استفاده کند، و همچنین نظارت یک طرف سوم را بر اجرای چنین تعهداتی بپذیرند — می‌تواند در راستای منافع هر دو کشور باشد. بر اساس گفتگوهای اخیر با رهبران طالبان، باور دارم که آنان آمادگی مذاکره بر سر چنین توافقی را دارند. و این می‌تواند روابط میان این دو همسایه را به‌گونه‌ای بنیادین دگرگون سازد. اکنون توپ در میدان پاکستان است.

In his recent statement, Pakistan’s Sharifs Chaudhry referred to the Doha agreement between the United States and the Taliban. While this is a misunderstanding, as he believes the agreement also addresses #Afghanistan-#Pakistan issues (see the text below the Doha agreement), it does raise a compelling idea. Indeed, a similar agreement between Afghanistan and Pakistan – in which both countries commit to preventing any individual or group, including ISIS and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), from threatening the security of the other through their territory, and also accepting third-party monitoring to oversee these commitments – could be beneficial for both countries. Based on recent discussions with Taliban leaders, I believe they are willing to negotiate such an agreement. And this could lead to a fundamental shift in the relationship between these two neighboring countries. The ball is now in Pakistan's court.
