Book six of the apparently neverending series of Deverry novels by #KatharineKerr was a strong outing, with a perfect balance between her usual elements of ethereal high magic and low, dirty, gritty small scale violence. Would be incomprehensible to anyone not already steeped in the setting and characters, however. #Bookstodon @bookstodon #fantasy
Since discovering them a couple of years back, #KatharineKerr 's Deverry series has become my fantasy comfort read; it's so easy to slip into her world with its particular catchphrases and characters that reoccur, but change, across hundreds of years of resurrections. This is the first part of her second quadrilogy, which focuses on the elves of her world. #bookstodon @bookstodon
#KatharineKerr 's Deverry is such a compelling place to read about, with its distinctive blend of Welsh folklore, somewhat plausible medieval life, and high fantasy. This one is very much a middle chapter of a series, with A and B plots not really interacting, and an inconclusive ending. #FinishedReading #Bookstodon @bookstodon
#FinishedReading part 2 of #KatharineKerr 's centuries-spanning Celtic #fantasy series, which artfully mixes high fantasy and more grounded medieval life. I enjoyed most of this but the homophobic depiction of the villains isn't great. #Bookstodon @bookstodon
#FinishedReading part 1 of #KatharineKerr 's 16-books-&-counting Deverry series. Partly standard high #fantasy - wizards, dwarves, and elves - it distinguishes itself by building the supernatural elements around a quite plausible medieval Wales, where wars are fought between a few hundred men who have to be painstakingly mustered from the local lords, and by the strength of its characters. Looking forward to the next 15+... #Bookstodon @bookstodon
Tfw when you find parts 2, 3, and 4 of a 4-part series at a second hand book sale, but not part 1 (and then buy them anyway) #LifelineBookfair #KatharineKerr #Bookstodon @bookstodon
#FinishedReading we picked this up because it was first in a series, but it turns out to be Book 9 of some giant metaseries! It seemed pretty accessible, and I loved the part of the book set in the 9th century, but I wonder if the 12th century part, which has more fantastical elements, might have been better with more context on the world. The book uses exclusively Celtic (mostly Welsh I think) language, culture, and folklore as its inspiration. #Fantasy #KatharineKerr #Bookstodon @bookstodon
