In reply to Hurriyat Radio English (@HurriyatEN):

From Leisure to Liability: The Transformation of Tourism Culture in Afghanistan

Eid and holidays offer many families a valuable opportunity to step away from daily routines and share moments of happiness with friends and relatives. In Afghanistan, the arrival of Eid sees thousands of people heading to the scenic and pleasant regions of #Nuristan, #Band-e Amir, #Badakhshan, #Nangarhar, #Laghman, #Kunar, #Parwan, #Panjshir, & #Kapisa. These areas, known for their beautiful nature, lush valleys, raging rivers, & clean air, rank among the country’s most popular tourist destinations. However, beyond the enjoyment of natural beauty, observing the principles of responsible tourism & respecting local residents are issues that should never be ignored.

When accompanied by respect for the culture, traditions, & rights of local people, tourism can contribute significantly to the economic & social growth of a region. Unfortunately, in some cases, a number of tourists have been seen causing inconvenience & discomfort to local residents without considering their privacy. People in many tourist areas, particularly Nuristan, have repeatedly complained about the inappropriate behavior of some visitors. Taking photos or videos without permission, entering private areas, creating excessive noise, & disregarding local customs are among the actions that can damage relations between tourists & local communities.

Maintaining privacy is one of the most important ethical principles in travel. Every individual and every family has the right to feel calm & secure in their own living environment. Tourists must recognize that people’s homes, gardens, & agricultural lands are part of their private lives. Entering these places without permission or photographing people without their consent is improper and irresponsible. Respecting this right reflects the culture and good character of tourists.

On the other hand, protecting the environment and keeping recreational areas clean is a shared responsibility of all citizens. Unfortunately, after Eid holidays, large amounts of garbage, plastic, & food waste are often left behind in nature across some tourist areas. This situation not only spoils the beautiful face of nature but also harms water resources, wildlife, and the broader environment. Every tourist should collect their waste and dispose of it properly. Nature is the common heritage of all generations, and its preservation requires public cooperation.

Respecting the culture and customs of local people is also of particular importance. Afghanistan is a country with extensive cultural and social diversity, & each region has its own distinct customs and traditions. Tourists should respect the values, beliefs, and cultural sensitivities of the people when traveling to these areas. Appropriate clothing, polite behavior, respectful language, & avoiding actions that may offend others can pave the way for better relations between tourists and host communities.

Responsible tourism is not merely about enjoying travel; it is equally about accepting responsibility for the community & the environment. When tourists behave respectfully, locals will welcome them with open arms. This positive interaction can help develop the tourism industry, create economic opportunities for local residents, and better introduce Afghanistan’s natural and cultural attractions.

Eid and holidays are opportunities for joy, peace, and renewed energy. But this joy becomes more valuable when it is accompanied by respect for the rights of others and the protection of nature. If every tourist, in addition to recreation & sightseeing, also considers their moral & social responsibilities, the beautiful regions of Afghanistan will remain clean, green, & attractive for future generations. The culture of responsible tourism helps preserve nature & the peace of local people on the one hand, and on the other hand, it presents a positive & civilized image of our society.

Tourism in Afghanistan: From Recreation to Responsibility

Holiday periods offer many families the opportunity to escape their daily routines and spend joyful moments with friends and relatives.

With the arrival of Eid, thousands of Afghans head to recreational areas in Nuristan, Band-e Amir, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Paktia, and other provinces.

These areas are considered suitable for tourism due to their breathtaking nature, lush forests, rivers, and clean air. However, it's crucial not to harm nature, to respect the principles of tourism, and to show respect for the culture of the local residents.

Tourism helps the region's economic and social development when the culture, customs, and rights of the local people are respected.

Unfortunately, it is sometimes seen that tourists intrude on people’s private lives, causing them discomfort; residents of many areas, particularly in Nuristan, have repeatedly complained about the inappropriate behavior of some tourists.

Entering people’s private property without permission, taking photos or videos, creating excessive noise, and disregarding local customs and etiquette are harmful to the relationship between local residents and tourists.

Protecting privacy during travel is an important and ethical principle. Every individual and family has the right to feel safe and peaceful in their environment.

Tourists should understand that gardens and agricultural land are part of the personal lives of local residents. Entering these areas without permission and taking videos is an inappropriate and irresponsible act.

Observing this principle demonstrates a tourist’s cultured behavior.

Furthermore, environmental protection and maintaining the cleanliness of recreational areas are a shared responsibility.

Sadly, after the end of Eid holidays, some recreational areas are littered with plastics and leftover food remains, damaging the beauty of nature, harming aquatic resources, wildlife, and the environment.

Every tourist should leave their waste in a clean and appropriate place after tourism and eating, as nature is a shared heritage of all generations and requires a shared responsibility for its preservation.

Respecting the culture and customs of local people

Afghanistan is a rich country due to its extensive social and cultural diversity; each region has its own unique customs. Tourists should also respect the values, beliefs, and cultural sensitivities of local people during their travels.

Wearing appropriate clothing, exhibiting polite behavior, and avoiding actions that cause discomfort to others, as such actions foster relations between tourists and the host community.

Tourism is not only about enjoying nature but also about acknowledging responsibility towards society and the environment, familiarizing oneself with cultures, and showing respect for the host region.

When tourists engage in reciprocal acts of respect, local people welcome them warmly. This positive interaction can help the tourism industry grow, create economic opportunities, and promote awareness of Afghanistan's natural attractions and culture.

Eid and holiday days are for joy and tranquility, and this joy can be multiplied when the rights of others and the preservation of the environment are respected.

Every tourist should consider social and ethical responsibilities alongside recreation and tourism, as Afghanistan’s natural and recreational areas are also a right for future generations and their legacy must be protected.

Responsible tourism, on the one hand, helps to protect nature and the peace of the people, and on the other hand, it presents a positive image and showcase of the society’s civilization.

To learn something from every tourism trip and have good memories, it is necessary to take a local person as a guide, through which short-term jobs will be created for the people of the host region, and also one will become familiar with the historical background.
