Tourism in Afghanistan: From Recreation to Responsibility
Holiday periods offer many families the opportunity to escape their daily routines and spend joyful moments with friends and relatives.
With the arrival of Eid, thousands of Afghans head to recreational areas in Nuristan, Band-e Amir, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa, Paktia, and other provinces.
These areas are considered suitable for tourism due to their breathtaking nature, lush forests, rivers, and clean air. However, it's crucial not to harm nature, to respect the principles of tourism, and to show respect for the culture of the local residents.
Tourism helps the region's economic and social development when the culture, customs, and rights of the local people are respected.
Unfortunately, it is sometimes seen that tourists intrude on people’s private lives, causing them discomfort; residents of many areas, particularly in Nuristan, have repeatedly complained about the inappropriate behavior of some tourists.
Entering people’s private property without permission, taking photos or videos, creating excessive noise, and disregarding local customs and etiquette are harmful to the relationship between local residents and tourists.
Protecting privacy during travel is an important and ethical principle. Every individual and family has the right to feel safe and peaceful in their environment.
Tourists should understand that gardens and agricultural land are part of the personal lives of local residents. Entering these areas without permission and taking videos is an inappropriate and irresponsible act.
Observing this principle demonstrates a tourist’s cultured behavior.
Furthermore, environmental protection and maintaining the cleanliness of recreational areas are a shared responsibility.
Sadly, after the end of Eid holidays, some recreational areas are littered with plastics and leftover food remains, damaging the beauty of nature, harming aquatic resources, wildlife, and the environment.
Every tourist should leave their waste in a clean and appropriate place after tourism and eating, as nature is a shared heritage of all generations and requires a shared responsibility for its preservation.
Respecting the culture and customs of local people
Afghanistan is a rich country due to its extensive social and cultural diversity; each region has its own unique customs. Tourists should also respect the values, beliefs, and cultural sensitivities of local people during their travels.
Wearing appropriate clothing, exhibiting polite behavior, and avoiding actions that cause discomfort to others, as such actions foster relations between tourists and the host community.
Tourism is not only about enjoying nature but also about acknowledging responsibility towards society and the environment, familiarizing oneself with cultures, and showing respect for the host region.
When tourists engage in reciprocal acts of respect, local people welcome them warmly. This positive interaction can help the tourism industry grow, create economic opportunities, and promote awareness of Afghanistan's natural attractions and culture.
Eid and holiday days are for joy and tranquility, and this joy can be multiplied when the rights of others and the preservation of the environment are respected.
Every tourist should consider social and ethical responsibilities alongside recreation and tourism, as Afghanistan’s natural and recreational areas are also a right for future generations and their legacy must be protected.
Responsible tourism, on the one hand, helps to protect nature and the peace of the people, and on the other hand, it presents a positive image and showcase of the society’s civilization.
To learn something from every tourism trip and have good memories, it is necessary to take a local person as a guide, through which short-term jobs will be created for the people of the host region, and also one will become familiar with the historical background.
