Olaiputtu, a restaurant run by Sri Lankan refugee women in Thoothukudi, has completed 1 year. With help from UNHCR, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi, Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi Mayor N. P. Jagan and the Collector, the women have been able to make the restaurant self-reliant. The Thoothukudi Corporation waived off the deposit money and fixed only the monthly rental amount. The UNHCR is helping the women become self-reliant and contribute to their community. The Olaiputtu owners are confident of branching out to other cities in southern Tamil Nadu. Kanimozhi appealed to the district administration and civic authorities to patronise Olaiputtu and not compromise on quality and hygiene.

According to a paper published ahead of the last general election in 2019, if India’s Lok Sabha seats are redistributed across states after the delimitation exercise scheduled to be conducted after 2026, then states in North India may gain more than 32 seats, at the expense of southern states, which may end up with approximately 24 fewer seats.
