Finally got to watch 'Backrooms' (alone in a nearly empty theatre, for the extra oomph) and it was as unnerving and uncanny valley-esque as I'd hoped it would be. It built on Kane Parsons' short films, like they built on the viral creepypasta that preceded them, and created a full-length horror movie around them. Even though the film mostly relies on existing lore, you don't need to have any familiarity with the shorts to watch it, as it stands perfectly on its own. But if you are a fan of Parsons' original work, there are several cool nods to it that stand out.
The film utilises the first-person, found-footage perspective just enough to give the same unsettling feeling without overusing it, and the new characters and plot feel like an extended part of that world. Really liked the angle on how some of the horrors manifest and take form, it added to the creepiness without negatively affecting the "wtf" element of the mystery. It also adds complexity that makes you think about the movie after the credits roll. If there’s more to come from Parsons in the future, and given the box office numbers there probably will be, I'm definitely watching.
