The song was first recorded by Australian singer #Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show #SpicksAndSpecks, but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country.

One of the unbroken truths of crate digging in Australia is that you will always find at least one Kamahl record.

In the southern states you're going to find a lot of Nana Mouskouri but Kamahl is undefeated as the king of all op shop vinyl crates.

So much so that David has started to collect them in his regular op shop crate digging missions. And we've (only half jokingly?) talked about doing an EP of tracks only made from Kamahl samples.
