On 24 February 2025 at 05:00 in the morning a 37-years old programmer Alexandr Okunev set himself on fire in protest against the war near the Red Army memorial in #Russia #Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg, Królewiec). Local authorities managed to keep his self-immolation secret for almost a year.
Having resolved to carry out such a desperate act of protest as self-immolation, Alexander Okunev did not seem to be trying to attract attention—perhaps he feared that someone might stop him. Yet he clearly did not choose the date—the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine—or the location—the city’s main war memorial—by chance. Perhaps the time was too — the missile strikes on Kyiv on 24 February 2022 began at around five in the morning.
Despite the numerous cameras at the memorial, Okunev’s charred body was only discovered by a passer-by at around 6.40 am. In the snow, it appears the words ‘No to war’ had been spray-painted. Officers from the Leningradsky District Investigation Department in Kaliningrad were dispatched to the scene; in the duty log, Okunev’s self-immolation is mentioned alongside reports of two other bodies and a Year 9 schoolgirl who had run away from home.
Rest in peace 🕯
