Watching one of these films inevitably prompts thoughts of the other, even though their cultural backdrops could not be any further apart.

It's sad that the social construct of fragile masculinity harms boys who show affection, and both Monster (Hirokazu Kore-eda) and Close (Lukas Dhont) explored this with sensitivity and such heartbreak.
