Ah, I didn't mention it, but the KRS-One show on Friday at The Freight in Berkeley was fantastic!
I had previously communicated with a friend about going with me, when I returned from AMP in Montreal? He had not procured a ticket. No problem I thought! I would just print out the QR code from the ticket I had already purchased and give it to him and buy another one online.
Turned out: by the time I went online again? The show had sold out!
Thankfully there were "SRO" (Standing Room Only) tickets the day of the event, supposedly.
So, we met up early for dinner, chilled for a bit before the doors opened and I waited in the queue.
I got in (as well as maybe 5 people behind me too?), and enjoyed the standing room part of the venue, while my friend was able to enjoy sitting down when the crowd got a bit too rowdy (there were b-boys who parted the crowd and were break dancin, even doin head spins and such!).
As my friend described it: "Now I understand! KRS-One's sound check, blows most others away!"
At the merch booth after the show? There were some folks there from the Hip Hop Kultural Specialist class I took last year and they recognized me and we hugged and exchanged words, including getting a recommendation of a museum to check out when I am in Barcelona next week for Mira Festival!
I also bought a CD from Joey TRU who signed it at my request.
I haven't listened to it yet (the album/CD I bought is called TRUTH RULEZ THE UNIVERSE) but he has a Bandcamp page with an even newer release (not in physical form):
https://joeytru.bandcamp.com/album/fresh-off-the-pressMy friend bought a copy of The Gospel of Hip Hop signed by KRS-One, and was texting me the next day about the revelatory good time he had at the show.
So I am grateful that all worked out!
I think KRS-One is still tourin California?
I see a buncha dates in November. I may be out of the country, but if he's playin a show near you, I think you're likely to have a good time!
