In order to be "approved for flight into known icing" the Boeing test pilots have to hunt for known icing🥶❄ conditions and fly in it for hours. They flew from a flight test base in Moses Lake WA #KMWH to Minnesota last Tuesday, and returned to MWH. The pre-delivery Boeing 787-9 (in Shanghai Airlines livery) departed Portland #KPDX today as Boeing 906 to Moses Lake #KMWH. But it did a missed approach and "diverted" to Everett #KPAE. I put it in quotes because Boeing test pilots usually fly to Eastern Washington State for test maneuvers. I have to correct an assumption I made when a Boeing-owned 787-9 arrived at Portland #KPDX on Aug 4 (with RAT deployed by the Boeing test pilots as part of checking out its systems). It was evidently not in Portland for paint. The Boeing Portland Paint Hangar also does maintenance. It flew out today still wearing Shanghai Airlines livery, returning to Everett #KPAE via Moses Lake #KMWH.
