Sarah Mullally si è insediata formalmente come arcivescova di Canterbury. Si tratta della prima donna a ricoprire la carica di primate della Chiesa d’Inghilterra, storica confessione di Stato nel Regno Unito sin dallo scisma anglicano dal Cattolicesimo decretato nel 1534 da Enrico VII.
L’intronizzazione ufficiale si è svolta nella millenaria cattedrale di Canterbury alla presenza, tra gli altri, anche del principe William e della principessa Kate. La cerimonia è stata caratterizzata anche da una liturgia solenne.
Nel tradizionale question time del mercoledì, il primo ministro Keir Starmer ha augurato buon lavoro a Mullally davanti al parlamento britannico.
Mullaly, che ha un passato da capo infermiera nella sanità pubblica e che è già stato il primo vescovo anglicano donna di Londra, ha sottolineato alla Bbc la consapevolezza del “significato” della sua nomina arrivata dopo una serie di scandali sessuali culminati nelle dimissioni del suo predecessore, Justin Welby, accusato d’aver contribuito a coprire una vicenda di abusi su ragazzi compiuti nei decenni scorsi in seno alla comunità ecclesiale.

Sarah Mullally was formally installed as Archbishop of Canterbury. This is the first time a woman has held the office of primate of the Church of England, a historic state church in the United Kingdom since the Anglican schism from Catholicism decreed in 1534 by Henry VII.

The official inauguration took place in the millennium-old Canterbury Cathedral in the presence of Prince William and Princess Kate, among others. The ceremony was also marked by solemn liturgy.

In the traditional Wednesday question time, Prime Minister Keir Starmer wished Mullally well before the British parliament.

Mullaly, who has a background as head nurse in the public health service and who was previously the first female Anglican Bishop of London, emphasized to the BBC the “significance” of her appointment following a series of sexual scandals that culminated in the resignation of her predecessor, Justin Welby, who was accused of having contributed to covering up a case of abuse of boys committed in the decades past within the Eccles community.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Admits Failure in Decades-Long Church Abuse Crisis

The Former Archbishop of Canterbury acknowledged in a BBC interview the failure to adequately manage the Church of England’s sexual abuse crisis. He considers te scale of the problem “absolutely overwhelming.” Welby resigned in November of 2024.

The resignation followed an independent review criticizing insufficiency of responsiveness of allegations John Smyth. Smyth, a British church volunteer and lawyer, was accused of abusing more than 100 young men and boys over the course of 40+ years.

There was awareness of the abuse by Smyth since 2013. Welby was promoted to Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013. No known appropriate actions were taken between 2013 and November, 2024 to suffice as dealing with this case. Averaging 2-3 cases per year, Smyth likely abused another 22-33 boys and young men in that period of inaction under the knowledgeable leadership of Welby.

Welby said, “The reality is I got it wrong. As Archbishop, there are no excuses”–indeed. Freethought communities use this as an excuse at times to broad brush the churches; laity and denialist clergy claim one cannot blame the Church on this: They’re both wrong. A minority of clergy are at fault.

We should support survivors, embolden clergy to institute reforms, and re-orient secular critique to the clergy who are at fault and work with those want reform while having their freedom of religious belief and practice. This is only hard insofar as we conceive of it as hard.

Independent review showed Smyth continued to abuse in Africa, until his death in 2018. Conservative Christian theology is right here: Evil rarely, if ever, stops itself.

In its typical facile, dissimulating manner, the media has treated Welby’s protection of the brutal child-rapist John Smyth as a one-time, episodic event. In fact, Archbishop Welby is himself a notorious repeat offender who has blood on his hands. The malfeasance of this former #oil company executive turned Anglican #cleric goes way back.

During the first accredited excavation of children’s #MassGraves at the murderous Anglican #Mohawk #ResidentialSchool in #Brantford, #Ontario during 2011, Archbishop Welby ordered all the school records and gravesites destroyed.

During the summer of 2014, Justin Welby was named as a co-conspirator in #ChildTrafficking and killing by a #Brussels based #CitizensTribunal and found guilty of #CrimesAgainstHumanity. Part of the evidence presented to the Tribunal concerned Welby’s participation in a #CatholicAnglican child sacrificial #cult known as the #NinthCircle that operated extensively in the #Canadian ‘Indian #ResidentialSchools and implicates British, Dutch, and Belgian ‘royalty’.

The complicity doesn’t end there. It involves the world’s second biggest #mining company and a close associate and funder of Donald #Trump: Rio Tinto, whose biggest investors include the British royal family. Justin Welby’s ties to #RioTinto Mining and to more murder cropped up in September of 2022, when Tinto and its Canadian subsidiary, #StarDiamondMining, dealt with some “troublesome Indians” on the James Smith #Cree reservation in eastern #Saskatchewan.

After refusing to allow Rio Tinto to begin diamond mining on their land, ten members of the James Smith tribe were #murdered in one night. The alleged killer was a drug addict and drifter who conveniently died in #RCMP custody the next day. Six of the ten murdered people were relatives of Rio Tinto’s biggest opponent among the James Smith Cree natives, Chief Wally Burns.
