A quotation from Wendell Berry

We know that war depresses public dialogue and debate, enlarges executive power, diminishes citizens’ rights, encourages governmental secrecy and deception, and deforms the outlines of human decency. Thus a government making war for the sake of peace, freedom, and human dignity — as it will never cease to declare — will curtail the rights of prisoners, resort to torture, deny its errors, exaggerate its virtues, demonize the enemy, and (as is inevitable in modern war) kill many innocent people, including, of course, many children.

A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

Much has been said in this country about not wanting to participate in foreign wars and people who have said it, must now face the fact that foreign wars come very close to our own shores. We will always have not only the religious groups, but many groups who feel that war is wrong. I cannot imagine how anyone could feel otherwise with the picture before them today. But when force not only rules in certain countries, but is as menacing to all the world, as it is today, one cannot live in a Utopia which prays for different conditions and ignores those which exist.

Michael Walzer: "What Israel Is Doing Is Not Genocide"

Is Israel waging a just war? Yes, says moral theorist Michael Walzer. But he is critical of the manner it is being waged: strategically, politically and morally.

Pretty much comes down to this. If you are against Israel's call for residents of northern Gaza to evacuate south, you are basically in favor of aiding and abetting a Hamas war crime, the prohibited (by the Geneva Convention) use of civilian Human Shields.

It will take a few days for residents to flee south, and there will be significant mortality impacts due to dislocation and shortages, but Hamas is the enemy of humanity, and the most just and effective way to finally create a livable situation for Gaza's residents is to block Hamas' ability to use its immoral human shield strategy.

We'll be doing the people of Gaza a favor when #Israel gets rid of those evil beasts, first in the north, and perhaps next in the south of Gaza.

I'm sure that you as an advocate for #justice and won't have a problem with that. This is #war, and a #justwar if ever there was one.

Hamas use of Gaza residents as human shields is, as noted elsewhere, a war crime, under the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statue.

"Human shields are legally protected persons—either protected civilians or prisoners of war—who are either coerced or volunteer to deter attacks by occupying the space between a belligerent and a legitimate military target.[1] The use of human shields is forbidden by Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions. It is also a specific intent war crime as codified in the Rome Statute, which was adopted in 1998.[2][3] The language of the Rome Statute prohibits "utilizing the presence of a civilian or other protected person to render certain points, areas, or military forces immune from military operations."[4]"
