La Mélancolique, 1909
Jules Pascin was born in Bulgaria to a Jewish family. He spent much time in Paris where he was known as the "Prince of Montparnasse".
Pascin was a much beloved character but, struggled with depression. He died by suicide at 45 on the eve of a solo show. He slit his wrists + hanged himself in his studio leaving a message written in blood on the wall to his mistress Lucy Krohg.
At his funeral thousands of friends from the art community, + dozens of waiters + bartenders walked behind his coffin for three miles

La Mélancolique. painting by Jules Pascin, 1909. born to a Sephardic family of the surname Pincas, he adopted the pseudonym Pascin out of respect for his father's desire to dissociate Pascin's art from the family name. most of his subjects were women, many nude or only partially dressed. this work belongs to a collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
