A ★★★½ review of The Undercover Man (1949)

I've seen about 10 films with Glenn Ford and at least half of them have been film noirs. I REALLY like the man. But... I will never see him as a hardboiled film noir male lead, no matter how much he frowns. Sure, I think I could take Humphrey Bogart in a fight so it is not about being menacing or anything, I just look at Glenn Ford and think; "I could talk him out of a fight". And that is a difference. Ford is GOOD in the part though so this is just me doing an unnecessary "what if..?".

Joseph H. Lewis's The Big Combo (1955) is a fine film noir about a cop obsessed with nailing a gangster. Lewis was a visually imaginative director but it's John Alton's superb cinematography that makes it a must-see noir.

A ★★★½ review of A Lawless Street (1955)

Randolph Scott is marshal of a Colorado town. Theater owner Warner Anderson and saloon keeper John Emery are conspiring against him, for both business and personal reasons. Things get complicated when Scott's estranged wife Angela Lansbury arrives in town. She's an actress/singer that Warner wants to marry. This doesn't sit well with Anderson's mistress (who is also the wife of his nemesis, a wealthy rancher). All the complicated relationships kinda drag this one down a little. Scott does have one brutal bar fight though. Not as good as Scott's work with Boetticher or Peckinpah. Directed by Joseph H. Lewis (GUN

A ★★★★★ review of Gun Crazy (1950)

Joseph H. Lewis' best film and one of the best of the genre. Bart is a kid who just wants to shoot, but when he kills a baby chick with a bb gun, he's traumatized and vows never to kill again. The adolescent Bart (Russ Tamblyn, "Twin Peaks") still has a strange fetishistic need to shoot and gets arrested for trying to steal a gun. He goes to reform school then does a stint in the army as a range instructor. Now out of the army, the adult Bart (John Dall, ROPE) outshoots carnival performer Annie Laurie Starr (Peggy Cummins).

currently in my queue. Looks amazing.

Young 'Rusty' Tamblyn plays a kid so fixated on guns that he'll wander out on a rainy night just to steal one, in the fantastic opening of GUN CRAZY (1950). And what a dramatic closeup to end the scene! #GunCrazy #FilmNoir #JosephHLewis #RussellHarlan | #BOTD #RussTamblyn
