Andy Diaz ha vinto la medaglia d’oro nel salto triplo ai Mondiali di atletica leggera indoor in corso a Torun, in Polonia. L’azzurro ha trionfato con la misura di 17,47, la migliore al mondo saltata in stagione. Argento per il giamaicano Jordan Scott (17,33), bronzo per l’algerino Yasser Triki (17,30). Settimo l’altro azzurro Andrea Dallavalle: l’argento iridato si è fermato a 16.90.
Dopo il bronzo ai Giochi olimpici di Parigi 2024, la carriera del campione italo-cubano è stata una continua ascesa: oro agli europei indoor 2025 e oro ai mondiali indoor 2025, riconfermato un anno più tardi sulla pedana di Torun. Non doveva nemmeno esserci Andy Diaz in Polonia, non lo prevedevano i piani del suo coach Fabrizio Donato. Lui ha insistito e ha regalato all’Italia la prima medaglia di questa rassegna al primo giorno di gare: subito del metallo più prezioso. È bastato un salto, il primo, per firmare la miglior misura dell’anno. La dimostrazione di forza di un animale da competizione.
Diaz aveva deciso di lasciare Cuba e la squadra cubana dopo le Olimpiadi di Tokyo, nell’estate 2021. Il trasferimento in Italia, i salti a Castelporziano e poi il tesseramento nella Libertas Unicusano Livorno nel 2022. Un anno più tardi è arrivata la cittadinanza italiana ed è cominciata la collezione di successi in maglia azzurra.

Andy Diaz won the gold medal in the triple jump at the indoor World Athletics Championships currently taking place in Torun, Poland. The Italian athlete triumphed with a jump of 17.47, the best in the world achieved this season. Silver for the Jamaican Jordan Scott (17.33), bronze for the Algerian Yasser Triki (17.30). Seventh was the other Italian athlete, Andrea Dallavalle: the world silver medalist stopped at 16.90.
After the bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the career of this Italian-Cuban champion has been a continuous rise: gold at the 2025 indoor European Championships and gold at the 2025 World Indoor Championships, confirmed a year later on the Torun track.
