The Search for Franklin: A 170-Year-Old Mystery

The search began in 1848. In 1854, John Rae heard of the crew's fate by local Inuit; accounts of starvation and cannibalism. These reports, including artifacts, were dismissed by British authorities. For over a century, official search parties largely ignored Inuit knowledge of the events and potential wreck locations. #Canada #FranklinExpedition #Inuit #JohnRae 🇨🇦

@canadaehx
There is a connection to the search for the #Franklinexpedition:
Paul Kane wrote in his diary on June 12, 1848: "We arrived at the Paw (sic!) where my old friend, Mr. Hunter, ... gave me a most hearty welcome ... We met here Sir John Richardson and Dr. Rae, en route to Mackenzie River with two canoes in search of Sir John Franklin.“
