Took a little break from it, but I'm finally finishing the trilogy! I had mixed feelings about the first book, but really enjoyed the second, so hopefully the third and final book won't disappoint.

Got a library card and immediately borrowed two Stephen Graham Jones titles that are either hard to find in stores here or really expensive. Then I also bought some books, of course. The rest is just some snaps from the last week or so!

𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 - 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗚𝘄𝘆𝗻𝗻𝗲

🗡 The Banished Lands have a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Although the giant-clans were broken in ages past, their ruined fortresses still scar the land. But now giants stir anew, the very stones weep blood and there are sightings of giant wyrms. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. 🗡

The book starts a series where we follow a group of characters from various backrounds and from different parts of the world. Pacing and worldbuilding start off slowly, but the prologue offers a great hook from the start. As the story deepened, I was full on emotionally invested.

The name of the series (The Faithful and the Fallen) describes the story very well as it evolves around duty, honor and courage. And how these virtues can also be twisted into something else when gods play their own games.

The writing is kinda old-fashioned and very august, but it fits the style just right. And it is great fun to read the lines out loud.

This is quite manly book and there are few female-charecters in active roles and just one female pov-character in this first book of the series. I did not mind per se, but noticed.

All in all, I liked this much more than I expected and can't wait for starting the sequel! 🤍

📓 John Gwynne: Malice (Tor, 2012 | cover: Paul Young)

Sigh.

*folds hands together under chin and points fingertips at camera*

Listen.

This book is so fucking annoying.

The first actual 300 pages are pretty much a snoozefest. Yes, there is a bit of worldbuilding, we get to know the main characters a bit, but not much happens. Which I wouldn't have minded as much, had the writing not been so cringy. Swear to Snakavik or whatever, say 'thought-cage' one more time and I'll scream. And, on that note, what is up with the hyphenated adjectives? This author uses more hyphenated words in one chapter than most use in their entire career. But then, after 300 pages, suddenly, the pacing picks up and things start to get interesting.

And then at the very very end, it gets good. So good, in fact, that I now have to read the sequel.

It better not be as annoying as this one.

Two completely different #fantasy novels for a change. #JohnGwynne and the #Bloodsworn series are highly popular Norse fantasy, #KhadijaAbdallaBajaber is an #Africanfantasy author from Kenya, not that widely known in my area. Both are good; I enjoyed the familiar Norse fantasy in #TheShadowoftheGods and the new-to-me African setting in #TheHouseofRust. The knitting doesn't match either of the books though!

The Shadow of the Gods Review (Spoilers)

YouTube

I'm about 20 chapters into Malice by John Gwynne and I can't seem to identify with any of the characters yet. After reading Shadow of the Gods I was invested with the characters after only a few chapters.

I will try to see if this book will draw me in for a while longer, but as of right now I'm not seeing me finishing this series.
