bologna: john giorno @ mambo, dal 5 febbraio fino all’inizio di maggio
John Giorno: The Performative Word, la prima grande retrospettiva italiana dedicata al poeta e performer newyorkese John Giorno (1936–2019), è in corso al MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna dal 5 febbraio al 3 maggio 2026.
L’esposizione, curata da Lorenzo Balbi, si svolge nella Sala delle Ciminiere e fa parte del programma istituzionale di Art City Bologna 2026, promosso dal Comune di Bologna con il sostegno di BolognaFiere.
L’evento celebra uno dei protagonisti più radicali e visionari della cultura contemporanea, noto per aver trasformato la parola in forma d’arte viva, capace di abitare spazi pubblici, reti di comunicazione e performance. L’opera centrale della mostra è Dial-A-Poem Italy, la versione italiana del progetto pionieristico del 1969, che permette di ascoltare gratuitamente, tramite il numero +39 051 0304278, registrazioni di oltre 30 poeti e poetesse italiane.
La retrospettiva ripercorre oltre sessant’anni di ricerca, includendo opere visive, video-installazioni, materiali d’archivio inediti, Rainbow Paintings e testimonianze dell’impegno politico di Giorno per la comunità LGBTQ+ e contro l’AIDS. L’esposizione è accompagnata da un catalogo edito da Mousse Publishing.

In this the legendary 1978 Nova Convention, we hear interviews with organizer/poet John Giorno, followed by the uncut Nova Convention panel discussion unheard for decades. Moderator Les Levine masterfully guides panelists William S. Burroughs, Robert Anton Wilson, Timothy Leary and Brion Gysin. Listen to them re-imagining science fiction and foreseeing a culture yet to come.
The Nova Convention was a three-day event, taking place in New York City on November 30, December 1 and December 2, 1978. Intended as a homage to William S. Burroughs, the “convention” included seminars, music performances, readings and more. Attending were an odd mixture of academics, publishers, writers, artists, punk rockers and counterculture disciples. The event had a small hitch. The organizers had announced Keith Richards’ attendance, which made the event a sellout. Richards’ last minute cancellation, however, gave the event an antagonistic oscillation between performer and audience.
The series was originally produced by Giorno Poetry Systems for WBAI radio. The 2013 restoration comes from John Giorno’s private tapes. Der Dichter John Giorno war die Muse von #AndyWarhol. Er erfand das Gedichttelefon - „Dial-a-poem“
Ende der 60er Jahre richtete er 15 Anrufbeantworter ein, auf denen man Aufnahmen einiger der größten Dichter seiner Zeit anhören konnte. Aus ganz Amerika konnte man gebührenfrei anrufen, um sich die Gedichte anzuhören.
Die Triennale Milano widmet ihm gerade die Ausstellung „John Giorno: a labour of LOVE“.
