By negotiating an end to the Ruby Ridge siege after two days on the scene, Gritz once again attained pop-hero status.

At Ruby Ridge, though, Gritz reminded everyone that his heroism had a troubling shadow: As he left the scene and went out to talk to the crowd, he relayed a message from Weaver to the skinheads and neo-Nazis gathered nearby by offering them a stiff-armed Nazi salute.

Tuesday’s White House press release focuses solely on the “radical left” without mentioning incidents of right-wing extremism in Portland and elsewhere. In 2017, two people were killed and one was seriously injured while defending two young women from white supremacist stabber Jeremy Christian on a MAX train. The 2022 shooting at Normandale Park left two people dead at the hands of a right-wing assailant. And, while the federal government has accused protesters of assaulting Department of Homeland Security officers at recent demonstrations in Portland, some federal agents have used violent force on people protesting peacefully.

Clark County Sheriff’s office Sgt. Scott Gilberti said he is not aware of any recently reported hate-speech incidents in Clark County. The resident who sent the photos to The Columbian asked not to be identified and did not reach out to law enforcement about the flyers.

According to data from the FBI, there were 530 reports of hate crimes in Washington in 2022. That year, the Vancouver Police Department reported 113 hate crimes to the FBI.

“I think first and foremost, without knowing what it actually says, it’s impossible for us to evaluate if it meets that free speech threshold or if it meets the criteria for hate speech,” Gilberti said. “I encourage people to reach out to us, but know in doing so that things like this may fall under that free speech category.”

2018-08-04, PORTLAND:
#PPB had set up a designated safe space for the #altright to hold their klan rally, but were trying to check for weapons as a condition of entering the event area. (fascist facebook influencer #JoeyGibson had been making lots of noise about how it would soon be “time for the guns to come out” in his war against portlanders who don’t appreciate nazis murdering their friends). anyway, the out of town fascists (many of whom later did january 6) just refused to enter and held a larger, armed rally right next to the space until they got treated to the spectacle of Portland Police suddenly-but-predictably attacking the anti-nazi #portland residents with near-deadly force.

2021-01-06, DC:
a similar dynamic took place in #DC on #j6 - lots of the #MAGA fascists didn’t want to go through the metal detectors and have their weapons confiscated in order to watch their would-be dictator give one more of his trademark syphilitic rants, so they just waited nearby until it was time to do the putsch. according to the #J6Committee this made #trump really angry (no joke: because it made the crowd look smaller on camera) and he demanded that the metal detectors be removed.
