Wayne Shorter, Schizophrenia, 1969 on Blue Note

Eleventh Wayne Shorter album, with Herbie Hancock, Curtis Fuller, Ron Carter, James Spaulding, and Joe Chambers. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, with Francis Wolff producing.

This is transitional between post-bop and free jazz – looser and closer to the edge than my normal taste, but worth a listen for anyone interested in post-bop or Shorter and Hancock.

My copy as part of the Story of Blue Note Records VMP Anthology, which was reissued in 2024.

Fire Music is a studio album by jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp released on Impulse! Records in 1965. "Malcolm, Malcolm Semper Malcolm" is dedicated to Malcolm X, whilst "Los Olvidados" is a homage to the 1950 film of the same name. Featured musicians include trumpeter Ted Curson, trombonist Joe Orange, alto saxophonist Marion Brown, bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Joe Chambers.

Writing for All About Jazz, Robert Gilbert called Fire Music "an often-fascinating album, rich in compositional and improvisational prowess", and commented: "Shepp puts together a record that is both challenging and accessible to most listeners... Fire Music is an album that belongs in any serious jazz fan’s collection." - Wikipedia

New World is the second album led by drummer Joe Chambers recorded in 1976 and released on the short-lived Finite label.

The review for AllMusic stated "Chambers excels in hard bop, avant-garde, soul-jazz, and fusion contexts, and New World is proof positive of that fact." - Wikipedia

Breaking Point! is an album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, recorded on May 7, 1964, and released on the Blue Note label. This album features Joe Chambers' recording debut. Although it features performances by Hubbard's recent collaborators Ronnie Mathews and Eddie Khan, it was a departure in style from his work with Mathews and the Jazz Messengers.

Chris Slawecki in his review for Encyclopedia of Music in the 20th Century called the album "a crackling mixture of free atonality, beautiful melody and blues feeling." - Wikipedia

Rebel Rouser – The Golden Twang of Mr. Duane Eddy. #MusicisLife #TedTocksCovers #DuaneEddy

I defy you to listen to today’s feature song and not get the desire to go out and buy a Gretsch 6120T-55 guitar and then plug it into a Magnatone amp. The song is ‘Rebel Rouser’ by Duane Eddy. This…

Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue

Hutcherson is the band leader here, on his first released (but 2nd recorded) solo album, but the pieces are all by Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers.

Then again, these works are *highly* improvisational post-bop. Hutcherson, Hill and Chambers are joined by Sam Rivers on tenor sax, Richard Davis on bass and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet.

Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique

Another excellent Hutcherson release, this one from 1967, featuring Herbie Hancock (piano), Albert Stinson (bass), and Joe Chambers (drums).

Close mic’ed in the RVG style, with Chambers’ cymbal work super prominent in the mix and mastering. Lots of interesting harmonic work; overall a really great listen.
