Two Miami police officers are suing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon: “In the film based on the 2016 drug raid, they portray us as corrupt.”

The Netflix thriller, titled “The Rip,” is based on a real drug raid that occurred in 2016 in Miami Lakes, Florida, and stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who will now be going to court. The reason? Some agents involved in the real operation have sued the actors’ production company, Artists Equity, accusing the film of portraying them as corrupt police officers.

The 2016 Miami operation is one of the largest seizures of money in the local police’s history: over $24 million was found hidden behind a false wall. From that story was born the film directed by Joe Carnahan, with Damon and Affleck playing the roles of two Miami-Dade narcotics agents.

However, according to detectives Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith, the film transformed a real police operation into a story of corruption, suggesting that the involved agents were “dirty cops.” Santana and Smith are never named directly, but according to the two agents, the details, characters, and dynamics are attributable to them.

“When you say ‘rip,’ you’re saying someone stole something. We didn’t steal a single dollar,” Santana told 7 News Miami. The agent explained that after the film’s release, friends and colleagues started making fun of him, asking him “how many buckets of money” he had stolen. The police officers’ lawyer, Ignacio Alvarez, attacks: “They portrayed the officers as corrupt. Now their reputation is damaged.” The agents are seeking monetary compensation and a public correction. So far, neither Damon nor Affleck has commented on the lawsuit.
