the text used for the 'lorem ipsum' filler text comes from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC.
today it's used as a filler which makes it easier to examine a layout without getting distracted by the content of the text, since it closely mimics the shape and distribution of English.
