Sarah Vaughan, Sarah Vaughan, 1955 on EmArcy

Later reissued as Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown, this was Vaughan’s second self-titled LP, and her second studio album. The band also includes Paul Quinichette on tenor sax, Roy Haynes on drums, Herbie Mann on flute, and Jimmy Jones on piano.

It was originally recorded December 18th, 1954, and released in 1955. What a masterful set of recordings.

My copyβ€”via private saleβ€”is the Acoustic Sounds Series reissue from 2021, on 180 gram vinyl, with a gatefold cover and an inner liner about the series and the role of Quality Record Pressing and Chad Kassem.

Illinois Jacquet - Swing's the Thing

1956 and Jacquet is making a great case for why Swing should get more respect. Just a whole lot of energetic fun, and when the tempo slows down, some beautiful ballad playing.

With Jacquet (tenor), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Jimmy Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Jo Jonesβ€”no, not Philly Joe Jonesβ€”on drums.

"Handy Man" is a song written by singer #JimmyJones and songwriter #OtisBlackwell. Recordings by #DelShannon and The Sparks Of Rhythm list Charles Merenstein as a co-writer, as does #BMI. The Sparks Of Rhythm version on the Apollo 541 single version released in 1959 credits Andrew Barksdale and Merenstein as writers, omitting Jimmy Jones. The song is noted for Jones singing "Come-a, come-a come-a come-a, come come-a, yeah", which is heard at the beginning.
