Dire Straits, Making Movies, 1980 on Warner Brothers

Released on Vertigo in the UK but Warner Bros in the US, this was the third full-length from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Mark Knopfler. David Knopfler left the band during the recording of the album and reportedly Mark re-recorded all this guitar parts.

There was a box set of Dire Straits Studio Albums (1978-1991) that came out originally in 2013 and again in 2020 – I’ve been keeping my eye out for one of those while also collecting the individual original releases.

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a later pressing (1983?) by Speciality.

OK, you’ve said “lust “so now I have to use this #PattiSmith track, even though it’s her most well-known and arguably most commercial recording. Is there a more anthemically Springstonian melody ever committed to vinyl? Yes, it's Bruce's music, (mostly) Patti's words. And those words:

"Love is an angel disguised as lust
Here in our bed until the morning comes."

Perhaps not the most original thought, but as an adolescent grappling with, well, adolescence, when my friend’s cool older brother introduced me to Patti, it was revelatory to me. This was the text I needed to understand what would swirl in my blood and all too often fuck up my life.

So here we have Patti driven by a bit of #Springsteen bombast, delivered in a crisp #JimmyIovine-produced package. What did all that do? Make a gorgeous record, and get Patti on the radio. Well done, all.
