Lawson's almost always played around with layouts like this, as far back as TMNT's first volume's 49th issue. His work for volume 2 is full of these wonderful, sometimes almost collage like splash pages that abandon panel borders and just let characters and moments almost free-float. It's a fantastic way to tell a story using still images and I think he's at his best when doing so.
